The newest National park in Utah, Capitol Reef National Park is a hidden treasure filled with cliffs, canyons, domes and bridges in the Waterpocket Fold, a geologic monocline (a wrinkle on the earth) extending almost 100 miles. Glass mountains and Gypsum sink holds intermingle with volcanic legacy sills, chimneys and domes. Beyond the obvious red cliffs that cut through the park, Capitol Reef’s rich cultural history dates to archaic hunter-gatherers, the prehistoric Fremont Culture (whose petroglyphs still adorn the cliffsides), and pioneer farms, orchards and homesteads. And the Visitors Center sells locally grown and made apple pie…. what’s not to like here?
